When I went back after some leave, I found I was allocated a crime where a punter had reported their crime stolen and it had been recovered. Without going into too much detail it would appear the loser of the car knew the driver as it was their partner.
This person is in quite a prominent position locally and had been given the opportunity to come clean but they failed. Hence why I now have a case of perverting the course of justice to investigate. Now this is a very serious allegation and one that the Police do not take lightly. It carries a sentence of life imprisonment but obviously that is very rarely dished out and for good reason.
I rang the victim on their phone and they asked if I could ring back in 15 minutes as they were driving. (Some people are just stupid!!) When I rang them back they said they had a replacement car from the insurance till they get theirs back and they denied any knowledge of the offender. Do the public really think we are that stupid?????
I gave the victim some options but they effectively said they had no knowledge. I would have preferred it if they said:
"OK I am sorry, I made a mistake, I panicked and reported it stolen" Or something similar. But having given them the options and they have declined, they will now face arrest and possible prosecution. You may think this is a little harsh, but given the amount of time that has already gone into this, the fact they have claimed on their insurance and are running around in a car that is probably costing the insurance about £300-400 a week and the fact they chosen to ignore the options, I don't think it is harsh
We have a lot of cars reported stolen when they have not been, but very rarely are we able prove it to the contrary. So maybe this punter will think twice next time they try to have us over. We all pay enough to insurance companies only for the premiums to be hiked up by incidents like this
